Packing for Scotland as an Indian traveller is tricky. The weather changes constantly - you can experience sun, rain, wind, and cold all in one day. But overpacking the wrong things just adds weight and fees. Here is exactly what to bring (and skip) based on 20 years of experience.
Clothing - The Essentials
- Waterproof jacket with hood: the single most important item. Regatta or Columbia jackets cost £40-80 - buy one in India or here. A windproof umbrella from Marks & Spencer also helps.
- Layers: 3-4 t-shirts (cotton for summer, thermal for winter), 2 long-sleeve shirts or sweaters, a lightweight fleece or hoodie.
- 2 pairs of jeans or comfortable trousers. 1 pair of shorts for rare warm days.
- Warm hat, scarf, and gloves - needed even in summer evenings, ESSENTIAL in winter.
- Comfortable waterproof walking shoes: the most important footwear. Break them in before your trip. Clarks or Skechers are comfortable options.
- One smart-casual outfit for Military Tattoo, Hogmanay, or nicer restaurants.

What NOT to Bring from India
- Heavy winter coat - buy a good waterproof jacket. Do not pack your heaviest puffer unless visiting in December-February.
- Fancy jewellery - Scotland is safe, but you will not need it for day-to-day sightseeing.
- Too many traditional outfits - one or two for special occasions is enough. You will mostly wear western clothing for comfort.
- Heavy toiletries - shampoo, soap, toothpaste are cheaper here. Pack travel-size only.
- Multiple pairs of shoes - one good walking pair + one casual pair is enough.

Final Packing Tips
Roll clothes instead of folding (saves space). Use packing cubes to organise by category. Keep a change of clothes and toiletries in your carry-on. Scottish airports enforce 100ml liquid limits for carry-on. Leave space for souvenirs - Scotland has excellent Harris Tweed, Scotch whisky, and Walkers shortbread.
