Indian Student's First Week in Scotland - Complete Survival Guide

Arriving in Edinburgh as an Indian student is exciting - but those first few days can be overwhelming. Between jet lag, setting up a bank account, and finding where to buy Maggi, there is a lot to figure out. Having helped dozens of Indian students settle in over 20 years, here is exactly what to do each day of your first week.

Day 1 - Get a SIM Card Immediately

This is your top priority. Giffgaff (runs on the O2 network) offers free SIM delivery to UK addresses - you can order before you leave India. Lebara and Lyca Mobile have cheap plans with great India calling (£5-10/month with unlimited calls to India). All three are available at Edinburgh Airport's WHSmith or any Tesco store. For data-heavy plans, EE and Vodafone have the best coverage in Scotland but cost more.

Day 1 - Open a Bank Account

Monzo and Starling let you open an account fully online in 10 minutes - no branch visit, no proof of address needed immediately. You get a UK account number and sort code instantly, and the debit card arrives in 2-3 days. For traditional banking, Barclays and Lloyds have branches near the University - but expect the process to take 1-2 weeks and require your BRP and tenancy agreement.

Day 2-3 - Stock Up on Indian Groceries

Head to Krishna Foods on Gorgie Road (bus 2, 3, or 25 from the city centre). It stocks everything: MDH and Everest masalas, fresh paneer, frozen parathas (Shana brand), Maggi (all flavours), basmati rice, and Indian sweets. Akash Foods on Leith Walk has the best spice selection including kasuri methi and black cardamom. Large Tesco Extra at Corstorphine has a solid 'World Foods' aisle with paneer, ghee, and frozen naans. See our complete Indian grocery guide for Edinburgh.

Day 3 - University Registration & Transport

Complete your BRP collection, student ID, and module enrolment. Download the Lothian Buses app and get a Ridacard (£56/month for unlimited city travel). For trains, the Trainline app is essential - Edinburgh to Glasgow is 50 minutes (£5-15 depending on booking). The Young Scot Card gives 50% off bus travel across Scotland for students under 25.

Day 4 - Register with a GP & NHS

Register with a General Practitioner near your accommodation immediately - it is much harder to register when you are already sick. Find your nearest GP on the NHS Inform website. You will need your BRP and proof of address. The NHS covers GP visits and hospital treatment (you already paid the Immigration Health Surcharge with your visa). Also register at a local pharmacy (Boots or LloydsPharmacy) for repeat prescriptions.

Day 5 - Join the Indian Community

Join the Edinburgh Indian Student Association on Facebook and WhatsApp - they organise Diwali and Holi celebrations, cricket tournaments, and regular meetups. The University of Edinburgh Indian Society is very active. There are also state-specific groups for students from Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala - search for them on Facebook.

Day 6-7 - Explore Your New City

Walk the Royal Mile from the Castle to Holyrood Palace (free, takes 20 minutes). Hike Arthur's Seat for panoramic city views - it takes 30 minutes from the main entrance in Holyrood Park. Visit the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street (free entry, amazing Scottish history section). And most importantly - find your nearest Indian store, cook a proper dal-chawal, and call home. Homesickness hits everyone. You will feel better after a familiar meal.

Essential Student Tips

- Always carry a rain jacket. Edinburgh weather changes every 20 minutes - check BBC Weather daily.
- Tipping is not expected like India, but 10% is appreciated in restaurants with table service.
- Scottish tap water is excellent and free - carry a reusable bottle.
- 'Indian time' does not work here. Be on time for classes and appointments.
- Get a Young Scot Card for discounts on travel, shopping, and entertainment.
- Open a student bank account once you have your BRP - Santander and HSBC offer good student accounts.
- Join the Edinburgh Indian Student WhatsApp group (ask at freshers fair) - people share accommodation tips, grocery deals, and travel companions.
- For affordable Indian meals on campus, check our budget travel guide.
